The French sociologist Emile Durkheim introduced the concept of anomie in his book The Division of Labor in Society, published in 1893. The term anomie means social disorder and is also used by Durkheim in his studies about suicidal behavior - in 1897 in his study on Suicide. Durkheim’s notion gains additional relevance during the crisis of COVID-19, particularly in relation to social distancing and lockdown. The crisis harbours within it both the conditions for anomie and also the conditions for Durkheim’s antidote to anomie – ‘moral education’, the latter taken from his 1902-3 lectures at the Sorbonne.
